Stuck with a Q tile in Scrabble but no U? Use these high-scoring Q words that work without a U to turn your hardest tile into your biggest points.
The Q tile is worth 10 points in Scrabble — tied with Z as the highest-value single tile in the game. But its reputation as a difficult tile comes from one simple fact: in standard English, Q almost always requires a U to follow it. When you hold a Q and the U tiles are already on the board or in other players' racks, you can feel completely stuck.
These words are valid in North American tournament Scrabble under the NWL word list and can be played without needing a U tile:
QI — 2 letters, 11 points. The life force or energy in Chinese philosophy. One of only two valid 2-letter Q words, this is your most flexible Q play and fits almost anywhere on the board.
QOPH — 4 letters, 18 points. The nineteenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Extremely useful when you need to play through an existing O or P on the board.
QANAT — 5 letters, 16 points. An ancient Persian underground water channel. Strong mid-game play when an A is accessible.
QIGONG — 6 letters, 18 points. The Chinese system of breathing exercises and meditation. Requires two Gs, which limits its usability, but scores very well when achievable.
QINTAR — 6 letters, 15 points. A unit of currency from Albania. Useful because it contains common letters around the Q.
QWERTY — 6 letters, 21 points. The standard keyboard layout. This word is valid in some dictionaries — always verify with your tournament word list before playing it in a formal game.
TRANQ — 5 letters, 16 points. Informal for tranquilizer. One of the rare Q-final words in Scrabble, allowing you to play Q at the end of a word rather than the beginning.
QADI — 4 letters, 14 points. A Muslim judge. Contains only common letters beyond the Q, making it easier to set up.
QAID — 4 letters, 14 points. A variant spelling of QADI. Useful because it offers a different letter arrangement for different board positions.
Experienced Scrabble players know that holding the Q too long is one of the most common mistakes in the game. If you do not have a clear Q play within two turns of drawing the tile, you should actively look for ways to get rid of it. Playing QI for 11 points is always better than missing multiple turns of high-value plays while waiting for the perfect Q opportunity.
QI is most powerful when played through an existing I on the board or when the I can reach a Double Letter Score square — this can bring a simple 2-letter word to 22 or even 33 points. Look for positions where the Q itself lands on a premium square, since the 10-point value multiplies dramatically. A Q on a Double Letter Score is worth 20 points from the tile alone before counting other letters in the word.
